Germany X Reader  ~ Comfort

Your shoes clicked against the ruined streets of Berlin with each step. A group of Russian soldiers harassed a German woman off to the side of the street. The broken and battered buildings loomed over you like the remains of a shattered nation.

You arrived at the building with the internationally known sign of a red cross pasted onto a white background.

The hospital.

With a few words to the nurse you were directed to the correct room. But it wasn’t like there was any difficulty finding him. There aren’t a lot of Italians in Berlin at the moment and the curl was a big give away.

You knew Germany would be right at his side, wracked with guilt over something that he couldn’t stop.

You stood a moment outside the door before entering into the room.

Italy lay on the bed, his eyes firmly shut in sleep. And the tall Germanic nation sat beside his bed, back towards you, watching the Italians long lasting rest.

He looked awful even from the limited view that you had; clearly he had been sleeping in the chair. He always was stubborn, probably pulled some strings to make sure that they didn’t kick him out.

“It’s been a while hasn’t it?”

His head whipped around to look at you, giving you an even worse look at him. Large bags lay underneath his eyes, his cheeks gaunt and his skin taking on a yellow hue. Wounds lay across his cheek, leading down into his uniform, and you were certain from the fresh  blood staining his clothes there are wounds lanced across his skin underneath.

“Ja, it has.”

You pulled up another chair that lay in the room and sat down next to him. The distance between the two of you seemed colossal especially remembering how close the two of you were.

Until you joined the Allies.

He was so angry when you left. Betrayal written across his face after you told him, rage lacing his voice as he told you to leave and never return.

And yet you’re back.

“This is all mein fault.”

Returning to a broken man.

“You’re acting like Italy has no mind of his own. That he didn’t choose this path.”

“If I hadn’t started this damn war… Italy’s in a coma and Japan went insane.”

You bridged the gap and gently lay your hand on top of his, only tightening when he didn’t pull away.

“Und my country is falling apart around me.”

“We are nothing but a vessel for our people, we listen and obey. You are no different, and no one could see how this would turn out.”

“If I had only…”

“You’re an idiot if you’re going to blame this entirely on yourself.”

With that you pulled the stern nation into a hug. He stiffened for a second before easing into it, and shocked you when his shoulders started shaking.

Was he crying?

You just awkwardly patted his back it had been an exhausting four years even for you.

He must have gotten to the point that after a whirlwind when everything stops then inertia rips you apart.

“I’m sorry,” his muffled voice somehow rang clear through your ears.

“I regret the vay I treated you, I never should’ve said those things to you.”

“It’s alright,” you reassured him.

His fists tightened then released the fabric of the back of your blouse as you gently stroked his back, slightly disgusted at the red that tainted your hand.

“Germany, did you ever see a doctor?”

“Nein, I’ve been here since Italy vas admitted.”

“Go see a doctor and then shower. You smell. Awfully I might add.”

“But Italy.”

“Even if he wakes up he’s not going anywhere and if it really makes you feel better I’ll be right here.”

“Danke.”

You thought of Allies plan of splitting the country to America, England, France and Russia to help it. How Prussia, now East Germany, would go to Russia and you could tell from the look in Russia’s eye that he wasn’t going to give up his new territory easily

Thinking of the way America and Russia were sizing each other up, both trying to see the military force of the other and building up their own and hoped that the world wouldn’t spiral into another war with what happened at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Then you thought of his slicked blonde hair, the way his eyes sparkled when he was trying to maintain his serious composure at your stupidity. The dark throaty laughter that rang out from him when he failed, the way your heart sped at those slight smiles that he would do when you had urged him out of his shell admittedly with the help of his brother.

“For you Germany,” you said as his form disappeared from behind the door frame.

“I’d do anything.”
This is a contest prize for :iconhetalia4ever99: who wanted reader to comfort Germany after WWII. I hope this is to your liking as it isn’t to mine. I have never been so exhausted in my life, classes are killing me, and I can’t write as well as I would like to so I apologize if you’re not happy with this. I’m pushing the schedule (It’s supposed to be up on Saturday but there’s next to no chance of that) for the other contest prize a bit back than what I originally had planned.
Sorry :iconhalostormhybrids:
Also I put Italy in a coma, why I don’t even know why I just do things.
Actually there is a reason for that.
After Italy surrendered to the allies, Mussolini created a Nazi puppet state in Northern Italy, the Italian Social Republic. This caused a civil war in Italy with half the country fighting for the Allies and the other fighting for the Axis. In my head cannon this is when Italy snaps into his 2P state and afterwards falls into a coma.
Cause why the fuck not.
I always thought that despite some physical wounds, a lot of Germany’s issues would be emotional.
Also I nearly typed in Ginormous and thought of Pushing Daisies.
Don’t say Ginormous cause that ain’t even a word.
Now if you will excuse me. I’m going to play The Cat Lady and then go catatonic for days.
:iconimdeadplz:
EDIT: Did slight editing and fixed up some sentences that were poorly arranged. Oh lord I was really tired when I first wrote this. You people are insane with coming up with ideas to wake up Italy.

I'm that person who thinks Japan was in a coma after WWII because of the nuclear bomb dropped

and then we all folded 1,00 paper cranes and made a wish on them and he woke up

just sprinkling in that factoid before I go start crying in the corner of this room
