America X Reader ~ Missed Opportunity

A smirk gracing his face as he snuck up behind you, long fingers twitching in excitement. His hands hovered right above your waist as his blue eyes sparkled with excitement.

You shrieked as his hands clamped down and with a heroic heave the blonde American lifted you.

"Alfred!" a giggle bursting out of you as the world spun around you.

Alfred tumbled and you landed with an oomph on America's chest.  He gave an exaggerated groan resulting in you giving playful smacks.

"Serves you right," you chastised, a small smile hidden on your face.

"You weren't in any danger," he stated a silly grin on his face, “after all heroes don't let damsels get hurt."

You glanced up to the sky and noticed the red streaks beginning to appear.

"I should go," you sadly murmured.

"You shouldn't be concerned, communism won't win in the election and we'll see each other tomorrow," America reassured you with his usual heroic smile.

"We'll always be friends right?" you smiled naively as your words stabbed him in the heart.

The friendzone's a bitch.

"Yeah," his smile was a bit shaky but you didn't notice.

Just tell her, three little words that's all.

"I'll see you tomorrow then," she got up to leave, he gave a small nod.

I love you.

As your form grew smaller Alfred's face morphed from his happy facade to the worry and regret that swarmed within him. Truth be told he wasn't sure that your country wouldn't turn communist, nor if he would ever see you again.

And he didn’t, not for forty long years. Communism swelled from your bordering countries and covered the country in red. Even when relations between him and Russia thawed from the ice cold relations between the two, the wall was still firmly planted and Russia was the only one who he ever talked to.

But today, today was the dissolution of the Soviet Union, after so many years of nights where his heart simply ached to simply see you again and he could finally fix one of the biggest regrets in his life.

The meeting was long and boring, mostly confirming the borders of the new countries that were going to show up on the map. The only thing that got him through the entire meeting was you sitting on the other side of the room, your beautiful face scrunching in concentration as the meeting progressed. Your pen occasionally being lifted to your mouth for you to delicately nibble on as you thought about what to write next, America felt himself fall deeper in love as he was faced once again with your weird quirks. Despite his slight anger at your chairs position next to Russia, it was overwhelmed at the feeling of his heart trying to burst out of his chest.

Your eyebrows frowned as you frantically scribbled on the page, the pen clearly dead. He could almost hear your exasperated sigh as you threw the pen down, giving a small adorable pout. The anger bubbled up again when the Russian offered you a pen and you smiled at him, his mouth curving to return the smile.

When they got to the border of your country it stuck him as smaller than what you had before the Union, indignation flaring through him. There is no greater slight to a country than taking their land.

When the meeting was finally over he nearly burst out of his chair in an attempt to beat the onslaught of countries, but every other country appeared to have the same idea. It was impossible to traverse the swarm of nations trying to talk with countries that have been locked away for so many decades.

So he waited until he noticed you slipping out of the group of countries, you never really could stand large crowds. You slid out of the door and out of the building with America quickly following you.

The cold air nipped at your cheeks as you shoved your hands into your coat pockets.  Your breath turning to fog with each exhale.

“Yo!”

You whipped around to notice the blonde nation, looking the same as the day you left.  His stubborn cowlick still poking out from his blonde hair.

“It’s been a while hasn’t it?” you stated, a slight smile appearing at the swarm of memories.

“Yeah.”

Tell her.

“Hey… Could I just tell you something?” his face scrunched into an emotion that you couldn’t place.

“Sure.”

“I just wanted to say that I really missed you.”

“I missed you too.”

He turned on his heel and hunched his shoulders out as he walked away.

You coward, you haven’t seen her for decades and you still can’t say it. She’s going to slip through your fingers again.

He turned around to blurt it out and opened his mouth, but no noise came out as Russia had appeared in his mental debate. He wondered vaguely if he should go over there to protect you when his world stopped when the Russian pulled you up into a kiss. Your left hand reached up to weave into his platinum blonde hair, gold ring glittering on the fourth finger.

You pulled away with an expression he could recognize quite easily, it was the same face he looked at you with.

It was love.

She already slipped away.

He turned to walk away as you nuzzled your nose with his bigger one.  And with every step away from the love of his life with the love of hers, regret weighed down his heart.

I love you, despite the fact that you never will.
This is my first story with America, and I wanted to write something with a bit more disappointing (grim maybe?) for the Country. I don’t really think that this is an AmericaXreaderXRussia as it mostly focuses on America’s relationship with Reader-chan.
I have a really angsty one with Canada planned and a half finished somber England one, featuring ChibiCanada and Chibi America.
I also am planning to finish all of the unfinished stories on here and clear up my unfinished folder.
That probably won't happen but I can dream, can't I?
